Sørvær – the main island

Sørvær is the island where the cabins are located, and it offers a varied and scenic terrain with many exciting hiking opportunities, a chance to observe rich wildlife, and enjoy idyllic beaches with crystal-clear waters.

Pack your backpack with good drinks and food, and hike along the road that takes you past a traditional lavvo (a traditional Sami tent, typically made from wood and canvas, used for camping and shelter), which is located near the cabins.

To the southwest of the island, you will find Gapahuken (a traditional Norwegian shelter made for outdoor protection against the weather) , a charming oasis in the middle of nature. To reach it, follow a trail that takes about 40 minutes to walk, but the effort is well worth it – for nearby, there is an idyllic beach, a perfect place for a break and to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Brønnøy in Helligvær

Brønnøy is worth a visit – here, old and new blend together in a unique way. The island is known for its traditional Nordland houses, sturdy buildings with a long history that testify to the area's cultural heritage and adaptation to the northern Norwegian climate. All over Brønnøy, you will find great hiking trails, but note that they are only accessible on foot. You can experience lively wildlife, including wild sheep, and enjoy various hiking opportunities in several idyllic valleys.

For those who want a refreshing dip, the island also offers smooth rocks suitable for swimming.

From the viewpoint, which is 34 meters above sea level, you can see up to 14 municipalities on a clear day.

Vokkøy – the largest island of Helligvær

Vokkøy offers impressive panoramic views and a varied cultural landscape that stands out from, for example, Sørvær. From the island’s viewpoint, you get a sweeping view of the Vestfjord, Lofoten, and Bodø – a perfect introduction to what Helligvær is all about.

The island is a paradise for cyclists, with paths winding through both dense forests and open landscapes, and here you will find a rich variety of wildflowers that have long been missed.

With several beautiful swimming spots, Vokkøy is ideal for a relaxing break: we recommend bringing a packed lunch, stopping by the pier, and enjoying the spectacular view.

Right across from Vokkøy is Vetterøya, with its picturesque harbor and beautiful beach. For quick and easy access, Vokkøy is served by the express boat.

Storsørøya

Storsørøya, the island located in the heart of the weather, carries the mark of a rich history. The church stands that was originally built as a prayer house in 1899 and later consecrated as a chapel in 1908. Today, the church is a gathering place for the people of Helligvær, a place where both joy and sorrow are shared. If you meet a local, feel free to ask about the story behind the church’s location – a tale that
adds an extra dimension to the island.

On Storsørøya, you will also find a memorial to those who have lost their lives at sea, a quiet reminder of the power of nature. There are toilet
facilities on the island, and it offers great hiking opportunities in varied terrain. The idyllic church hill is a perfect place to sit down and enjoy both island life and the fresh sea air.

Bogøya

An interesting fact about Helligvær is that the church and cemetery are not located on the same island. On Bogøya, you will find the cemetery – a peaceful place where the stories of past lives and deaths rest. Many are surprised by this geographical division, which only adds to the area’s unique atmosphere.

Beiskøya

Beiskøya, the small island west of Sørvær, has no permanent residents but is located very close to Sørvær. This makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the inner archipelago by kayak or rowboat. Bring a picnic basket and set off on a sail when the sea is calm, the midnight sun shines, and the birds sing – a summer memory for life.

On all the islands, there are good places to dock boats with easy access. Whether you prefer hiking, cycling, or island hopping, Helligvær offers unique experiences that combine nature, culture, and history in a fantastic way.

Activities for families with children

For families with children, Sørvær is a paradise of activities and experiences. Let the children play with buckets and spades on the beach, or organize a treasure hunt in the nearby terrain. Nature provides plenty of opportunities for both organized and free play. Look for crabs under seaweed and rocks, or try your luck with crab pots that can be released from the pier. Fishing rods are also available for rent, so both young and old can try fishing – either on land or at sea. These activities promote both play and togetherness, and will certainly create memories for life.

In the middle of the island, you will find a grass football field, a perfect place for friendly matches and active play. For the adventurous, there are also opportunities for insect hunting – a fun activity for both children and adults. As evening falls, we recommend gathering around the campfire. Here, you can enjoy the cozy warmth, share stories, and play family games together, which really tops off a day filled with experiences.
